I started with the fence structure, gluing the vertical and horizontal post and rail shapes which I cut from the darkest bark fabric onto the hand-dyed background fabric. Notice that I tilted the post slightly to enhance the perspective. I then cut small sections of the light bark fabric to glue over the rail section to define the shape of the fence. Adding a small dark sliver of fabric for the rail opening in the post is what turned this “wood” into a rail fence.
Unmended Fences by Natalie Sewell (44″ × 49″)
I've always loved old gardens — the ones where ivy and mosses invade the flower beds and move into the walls and fences; where one flower runs into another and no one fixes the fence for fear of interrupting the vines that grow on it. This is such a fence.
A picket fence that stretches across the width of a scene rather than receding into the distance is the simplest of structures to depict. But even this simple structure has dimension and requires perspective. The rail that supports the pickets is recessed and darker. I colored it with brown pastels. The pickets themselves, old, warped and hanging loose, show surfaces that need shading. I did that with dark gray markers. However, the real challenge in the scene turned out to be the light and dark shadows that play across the foliage between the pickets.
I've made garden scenes with picket fences before. Bright with blooms and lush foliage, they've all been neat and tidy. To make this one old and messy, I focused on the light in the scene. Dense shade implies large old trees and shrubs. By making the bottom left side very dark and gradually increasing the light towards the upper right, I achieved the dense look I wanted.
